Kolkata The green cover in West Bengal should be increased to at least 18 per cent in the next few years, said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on the ocassion of World Environment Day in Kolkata on Saturday. “We have 12 to 13 per cent green cover in the state and it should be increased to 18 per cent,” Bhattacharjee said at a function.

An independent study has found that green cover in Kolkata has declined by five per cent in the past few years, he lamented and expressed hope to get CNG from GAIL in the near future that would help reduce pollution in the metropolis. The chief minister also called for technology in the agri-sector to combat famine and flood due to global warming.

“This is a new challenge before us and we should come out with technologies to cope up with such uncertainties, which are on the rise owing to global warming,” Bhattacharjee said. He called for greater use of renewable energy to reduce pressure on thermal power and use of clean coal technology to protect the environment.
