Kolkata Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee wants legal action to be taken against corrupt partymen elected to various panchayat bodies.

Following the meeting with district magistrates on Wednesday, the chief minister has asked party brass not to interfere in government action against malpractices at the grassroots level.

At the CPM state secretariat meeting held in Alimuddin Street headquarters today, Bhattacharjee reportedly said that some of the DMs have complained of local level political resistance against government action. Such a situation cannot continue, Bhattacharjee told his party colleagues.

In the meeting the chief minister has made it clear that some of the schemes meant for poorer sections of the society have been jeopardised only because of malpractices at the grassroots level, party sources said.

“Since the launch of NREGA, malpractices at the gram panchayat level have been exposed. A section of elected members at the panchayat level is responsible for delays in publication of a clean BPL list,” said a senior CPM leader.

According to government reports, 50 of 341 blocks are yet to prepare the list.

Bhattacharjee’s remark at the high level party meeting came at a time when the ruling party has kicked off the ‘rectification programme’ to clean up the party.

“There are instances where the administration failed to take action against corrupt people because the officials at the block level had to face protests,” said a leader.
