Bulk part used, yet over Rs 40 cr MPLADS funds remain unspent

Ahmedabad, February 5 Since 1993, when the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) was introduced, the Gujarat MPs have received Rs 585.30 crore from the Centre so far, while a total amount of Rs 805.87 crore has been sanctioned under the scheme.

However, with the district authorities spending Rs. 542.05 crore till date, the rest of the amount remains unspent, said a report of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

According to the ministry, the maximum amount of Rs. 24.05 crore has been released for Somabhai Patel, Lok Sabha MP from Surendra Nagar, out of which Rs. 8.27 crore is yet to be spent, the highest unspent amount in the in the state in comparison with other MPs.

Among the Rajya Sabha MPs, Ahmed Patel from Varuch has the highest amount released against his name with Rs. 21.05 crore, out of which Rs. 2.57 crore remains unspent, followed by Kheda MP Arun Jaitley who has Rs. 13 crore released with Rs. 2.52 crore yet to be spent.

According to the report published in the ministry website, out of total Rs 585.30 crore released, Rs. 322,003,542 has been spent on drinking water facility in the state with as many as 4863 works done in the field. In education, a total of Rs. 428,302,862 has been spent on 2315 works, including buildings for government educational institutions, computers for government and government-aided institutions and other such projects

Under the scheme, each Member of Parliament is entitled to suggest to the District Collector for works to the tune of Rs.2 crore per annum to be taken up in the member's constituency. A Rajya Sabha MP can recommend works in one or more districts in the State from where he/she has been elected. The Nominated Members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha may select one or more districts from any one state in the country for implementation of their choice of work under the scheme.
