Kolkata A private bus overturned today leaving 12 passengers seriously injured at Mathpukur near ITC Sonar on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.

At 10 am the bus, running on the Bidhannagar-Garia route, was about to take the EM bypass route when two front-wheels came out of the bus. As a result the speeding bus toppled on the road.

Two of the passengers — Pintu Sarkar (35) and Sukumar Pal (40) — have been admitted to the Incentive Care Unit (ICU) of the Ruby General Hospital.

A senior officer of the Parama Island Police Station said: “We have seized the bus. The driver of the bus is absconding.”

“The bus is more than 15 years old and most of its parts are in very bad condition. We are looking into the matter to find out how the bus was plying in the city. A major accident has been averted as the bus toppled on the divider, otherwise it could have fallen in the roadside ditch and many people could have died.”

The police removed the bus and cleared the road in an hour with the help of locals who took the injured passengers to hospitals.
