At a meeting between various bus owners’ unions and the transport minister at Writers’ Buildings, the representatives of the unions said that they are going to take a final call on the proposed strike from August 9 on Sunday. “The bus associations asked me what can I offer them. I said I will look into the issue. But there will be no increase in the fare,” Kundu said. “Today (Saturday) all our members were not present. We will have a full house meeting on Sunday and decide on our future course of action. However, since the minister has sought 10 days’ time, we are going to honour his request,” said Sadhan Das, president of the Joint Council of Bus Syndicate.
“The minister has assured us that he will see to it what other benefits can be given to the bus drivers,” said Dipak Sarkar, senior vice-president of the Bengal Bus Syndicate. The union representatives also said that since Ramzan is around the corner, calling a strike would not be proper. Earlier this week, the state government had decided to give the bus owners a Rs 1 subsidy on diesel.
