Bus runs over boy, mob sets it on fire

An irate mob set two buses on fire after a private bus knocked down a 17-year-old boy who died on the spot.

The incident took place in the evening on the VIP Road at Kaikhali near Baguiati in North 24-Parganas. The police said the victim, Md Jahangir, was hit by a Barasat-Baruipur bus at around 5.30 pm, while he was crossing the road.

Protesting against negligence by the traffic police, locals blocked roads. The driver and conductor of the bus fled after the accident. A mob then set the bus on fire, along with another bus. Police vehicles and fire brigade personnel could not reach the spot in time following the road block. Later two fire engines were pressed into service to douse the fire.

Police later resorted to a lathicharge to bring the situation under control. Locals withdrew the road block at 6.30 pm.
