Even as Asha Bhattacharya, a resident of Sarsuma in Behala, slipped from the foot board and fell on the road, the Thakurpukur-BBD Bag-bound mini-bus started moving. Asha was run over by the rear wheels of the bus. The incident occurred in front of gate number two of the National Library.
She was rushed to SSKM hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Hours later, students of the Calcutta University blocked the Belvedere Road for sometime in protest against road accidents and demanded arrest of the bus driver. According to a senior officer of Alipore police station, a case under Sections 304 A and 247 of the IPC has been lodged against the driver.
