Ludhiana People, especially in the rural areas, were at the receiving end today as a majority of buses remained off roads.

Reason: more than 80 per cent of buses were used in ferrying people to the rally of the Students’ Organisation of India (SOI) held at Patiala.

According to sources, “On the instructions of the District Transport Office, around 400 buses were sent to Patiala, thereby leaving commuters in the lurch.”

Sources revealed that from each district, private buses have been arranged for carrying people as part of the crowd for the rally. On Tuesday, bus-owners handed over their buses for today’s rally to the officers of District Transport Office at the grain market near Arora palace. District Transport Officer Chander Gaind, however, was tightlipped on the issue.

The rural-bound passengers, meanwhile, had a tough time throughout the day as majority of the buses did not ply on their routes. Kamal Nain and Aarti, both Sidhwan Bet-bound passengers, said, “We had to wait for an hour to get the bus for Ludhiana.”

Jaswinder Singh Grewal, President, Ludhiana

Mini Bus Operators’ Association, said, “This time, mini buses were used as compared to big buses, which were put into use on January 20 and 21 for ferrying people to Amritsar during the oath-taking ceremony of Sukhbir Badal. Each bus owner was given Rs 1,500, which was far too less.”
