Dera Bassi Politicians were seen making a beeline for Bhankerpur village on Monday, where tension continues to prevail among the villagers over the death of Jasveer Singh, a village youth who came under the wheels of a bus.

The arrest of another youth in connection with the torching of the “killer” bus and holding the Chandigarh-Delhi NH-22 to ransom for over an hour following the accident on Friday evening has further added to their resentment.

Punjab Cooperation Minister and area MLA Capt Kanwaljit Singh and Punjab Youth Congress president Ravneet Singh Bittu visited the village on Monday and met the bereaved family and other villagers to muster support.

While Capt Kanwaljit, who is a senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader, assured that the case of rioting, damage to public property and restrain to public way will be withdrawn and the arrested youth will be released shortly, the Youth Congress chief demanded immediate compensation for the bereaved family.

Sensing the tense mood of the village, Bittu assured to lend full support and cooperation to the villagers.

Capt Kanwaljit also assured to impress upon the Centre for the construction of underpasses and flyovers in the area to avoid fatal accidents in future.

The villagers, on Sunday, had served an ultimatum to launch a mass agitation, if the arrested village youth was not released by January 9.
