New Delhi A 26-year-old man allegedly shot at his girlfriend at her residence before shooting himself dead in New Rajinder Nagar area of Central District. The incident occurred around 1 pm on Sunday.

Sanjay Aggarwal, who was unemployed, had gone to meet Uma Sharma, 24, in her rented accommodation, said the police.

“When Aggarwal reached her house with a bouquet, she was not home. After Sharma returned, a heated argument ensued,” a senior police officer said.

Minutes later, gunshots rang out and neighbours called the police. Police said that initial investigations suggest that Aggarwal had pulled a revolver from his pocket and shot at Sharma before shooting himself in the temple.

“He first fired two shots. A bullet hit Uma in her neck while the other lodged in her chest,” the officer said. Aggarwal died on the spot while Uma was rushed to

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where doctors describe her condition as critical. Sharma, who hails from Vrindavan in Mathura, had gone to appear in an examination conducted by the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited.

Sources added that the landlord, Sukhbir Singh Vij, has reportedly told the police in his statement that Uma Sharma, was living in his flat for the last eight months as a paying guest and that Aggarwal visited her often.

Vij said, “Around 1 pm, Aggarwal came with a bouquet and asked for Uma. I told him that she had gone to take an exam. He waited for her for about 15-20 minutes and within moments of her return, we heard three gunshots. We rushed over and found them lying in a pool of blood.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central District, Jaspal Singh said that the duo’s parents have been informed and are expected to reach Delhi tonight.

A case has been registered at the Rajinder Nagar police station and the investigators said that it seems to be a case of love affair gone sour.

Police said Uma worked in a private firm in Karol Bagh and that she and Sanjay were from the same college in Mathura — GAL Institute of Technology and Management.

Police are also waiting for doctors to declare that Uma is medically fit to make a statement.

“It may take time as her injuries are so grievous,” the official said. Investigators have already seized their mobile phones.

Singh added, “The weapon used is a slightly sophisticated version of a countrymade pistol and seems smuggled. It is unlicensed and has been confiscated.”
