Vadodara, April 01 Close circuit cameras and mobile phone jammers are to be the latest fixtures in examination halls of M S University. With students getting savvier with mobile phones and electronic equipment and finding means and ways to escape detection during cheating in the examinations, MSU authorities are contemplating fixing jammers to disable mobile network during the examination process. During the ongoing annual exams, the vigilance squad detected over 30 first year B.Com students with mobile phones inside the exam halls, who, but were let off with just a verbal reprimand.

Commerce Faculty, which accounts for 50 per cent of the MSU student strength, uses almost seven to eight buildings of different faculties to conduct their exams. This year, students have found new methods to cheat during the exams, the most popular being wearing T-shirts with hoods that allow them to use their hands-conveniently while someone outside dictates the answers on their ear-pieces.

Syndicate member and Commerce Faculty teacher, Pragnesh Shah said they had thought of placing jammers a year ago when former dean Prof S K Singh mooted the idea but somehow the plan didn't take off. "But with rising incidences, it is the right time that we act promptly and do something concrete," said Shah.

Meanwhile, questions are also being raised over dereliction of duty by the vigilance squad, which is empowered by the MSU pro-vice chancellor to initiate disciplinary action against students flouting exam rules. A senior MSU professor said, "Such mellowed attitude towards students despite strict rules prohibiting mobile phones and electronic gadgets in exam halls, will downgrade the entire purpose of examinations and the credibility of vigilance squads."
