Capital’s shame

New Delhi, February 3 According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the number of cases of crimes against women in the Delhi is much higher than the national average. The figures say it’s much worse when it comes to protecting children: Delhi stands first in most crime against children. Here are the shameful facts:

* Delhi’s Crime Against Women rate is 28 per cent as compared to the national average of 14.7 per cent
* Among the 35 mega cities, Delhi reported 31.2% of the total rape cases: of the total 1,706 rape cases reported in the country, Delhi’s share is 533
* 34.7% of abduction of women cases in the country was reported in Delhi (953 of 2,746 cases). The maximum number of dowry deaths cases were also reported in the Capital. While Delhi accounted for 18.7% cases, Kanpur stood second with 10.4 % cases
* In addition, Delhi reported 17.1% of cases related to cruelty by husband and relatives. It also accounted for 20.1% of the total molestation cases
* If you think these figures were bad, take a look at the Crime Against Children:
* Delhi reported the highest percentage of kidnapping of children cases at 41.1%, which translates to 597 of the total 1,452 children kidnapped in the country
* Of the 824 cases of rape of children, Delhi claimed the largest share at 378 (45.9%). In comparison, Mumbai stood second with 7.4%
* While there were 200 cases of children being murdered in the country, in Delhi it was 58 (29.0%)—again first. Lucknow stood in second place with 6%
