Judge GK Rai has fixed March 7, and directed the prosecution to file a reply on the application. The counsel of Capt Amarinder Singh stated in the court that the former chief minister wants to attend the session of Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Chandigarh on March 10 and 11. As such, he is not position to attend the hearing which was fixed for March 10. On February 13, Capt Amarinder Singh could not attend the hearing, because he had gone to Dubai.
Three sentenced for possessing poppy husk
SPECIAL-Judge-cum Additional Session Judge (ASJ) Sanjiv Berry has sentenced three persons to undergo 10 years imprisonment for possessing poppy husk.
These persons are Tara Singh of Kaunke Kalan village, Tajinder Singh of Saudekon village, Moga district, and Gora of Chuharchak Kalan village, Moga. The judge also ordered them to pay Rs 1 lakh each as fine. In default of payment, they will further undergo imprisonment for six months.
Delivering the verdict, Sanjiv Berry said that the prosecution successfully proved that poppy hush was recovered from the accused persons. The judge turned down the plea of leniency raised by the accused persons.
According to the prosecution, in June 2005, a police party stopped a tractor-trolley in Kothe Khajuran village on the basis of suspicion. During the search of the vehicle, 20 bags of poppy husk were recovered. The police arrested the three occupants in the vehicle. In defence, the accused pleaded innocence and claimed false implication, but failed to prove it.
Meeting for seminar on March 8
DISTRICT and Sessions Judge (DSJ) G K Rai has directed the concerned officers to make excellent arrangements for the conduct of the state-level seminar on ‘Female foeticide and the prevalence of intoxicants’, to be organised on March 8.
The seminar is being organized by Punjab State Legal Services Authority, in coordination with Bar Association Khanna and some NGOs, at Grain Market, Khanna. The DSJ said that Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Vijender Jain and several judges will participate in the seminar.
Addressing a meeting of officials in this regard, Rai said that the objective of the seminar is to create awareness among people about the serious affects of female foeticide on society, so that the people come forward to help the government machinery to book the accused involved in this crime.
He added that at the seminar, the speakers will read out papers on other problems like prevalence of intoxicants, and crimes against women and children in society.
The DSJ told the officers to make arrangements for sufficient drinking water at the site of the seminar, and ensure the cleanliness of the site too. He added that a number of subjects experts will educate people about the seriousness of these problems.
The DSJ also visited the venue and held a meeting of the sub-division level officers of civil, police, judicial and other departments, and assigned the duties concerning their departments.
He asked the officers to mobilize the representatives of the people, NGOs, and other social and educational institutions to attend the seminar, so that they could further educate the people in their areas. Those who attended the meeting included Rajinder Aggarwal, Chief Judicial Magistrate, K K Bansal, Civil Judge, H S Grewal, Chairman Punjab State Legal Services Authority and S S Gill, SDM Khanna.
