Mumbai A 16-year-old SSC student jumped to her death from the terrace of her home at Ghatkopar East on Monday afternoon. It is suspected that she committed suicide as she was caught copying during her board exams on Monday.

The body of the resident of Shanti Park was found by other residents and watchmen in the building compound around 1. 30 pm, shortly after she returned after her geography examination at her school, Pune Vidya Bhavan, which was also her examination centre. The watchmen and other residents informed her parents.

After the exam, instead of going to her flat on the third floor, she went to the terrace and jumped, landing headfirst on the ground. She suffered multiple fractures and a cracked skull, according to the police. She was taken to a local clinic at 60 Feet Road, Ghatkopar, and her body was taken to Rajawadi Hospital where the post-mortem was done.

DCP (Zone VII) Rajkumar Vatkar said, “Prima facie it appears to be that the girl was caught cheating in her exam.”

Police inspector Vijay Khaire of Pant Nagar police station added, “At the outset, we suspect she committed suicide due to depression. We will investigate the death with the authorities of her school tomorrow.”

A school employee said, “She was caught copying in the exam after which the supervisor confiscated her hall ticket. She was, however, allowed to write the exam. At the end of the exam, she was asked to bring her parents to school the following day and collect her hall ticket. Her mother usually picks her up from the school every day after the exam. However, on Monday, she left before her mother reached the school.”

The youngest among three daughters, the teenager’s father is a businessman. Khaire said that the body had been handed over to the family.
