Kolkata The CBI on Saturday arrrested a 27-year-old resident of Lalgeria village in Manikpara for his alleged role in the Jnnaeswari train accident. The accused, Bholanath Mahato, was picked up by the district police late on Friday evening and it was only after interrogation that the CBI arrested Mahato. He was produced in a Jhargram court, which remanded him to 10 days of CBI custody.

According to a member of the Joint Intelligence Team comprising CBI, CID, state police and Railway police officers, the CBI learnt of Bholanath during the interrogatipn Heeralal Mahato, who was arrested earlier in the case.

A senior police officer said, “CBI asked us to find the person. We nabbed him from Khemashuli in Kharagpur police station area late in the evening yesterday.”

“Bholanath was present at the (accident) spot and was involved in removing the pandrol clips. Bholanath has admitted to the crime. He used to work as a contractual labour for the Railways and knew how to remove the clips,” said sources, adding that Bholanath is an active PCAPA member and a close associate of Bapi.

Kaushik Sinha, defence counsel of Bholanath, however said: “Bholanath works in a local paper mill. False charges have been slapped against him.”

Kishenji injured, hiding in Midnapore: Cops

Midnapore: Top Maoist leader Kishenji has been injured and is hiding in West Midnapore along with an associate and a woman leader, police said Saturday. “Kishenji is hiding in the district and is injured. His associate Bikash and woman leader Tara are hiding along with him,” district SP Manoj Verma said. Verma, however, did not identify the exact location where they were hiding. Kishenji is believed to have been injured in a fierce encounter with the joint forces at Hatiloth forest on March 25. Tara allegedly led the Maoists who raided the Eastern Frontier Rifles camp at Sildah in the district on February 15 that left 24 personnel dead. Police sources said Bikash and Tara had plotted to attack a CRPF camp in Kathijore when the encounter near Duli village took place on June 16, in which eight Maoists were killed. They said 30 Maoist suspects have been detained with massive combing operations still underway. PTI
