Kolkata, August 16 A Day after the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file chargesheets against the accused in the Rizwanur Rehman death case, the CBI said on Saturday that they have enough evidence to nail them, including the police officers.

According to the CBI sources, the investigation is complete and details are being worked out to chargesheet the accused.

“We are also exploring the possibility of arresting the accused before the chargesheets are filed. The charge will be modified to abetment to suicide,” an official said.

“Our investigation is complete in the Rizwanur case. We are just waiting for the three-week stay that the court granted for any party to file appeal against the order. We can file a chargesheet against the accused in a lower court,” said a CBI source.

The body of computer graphics designer Rizwanur was found near the railway track in Patipukur on September, 2007. The CBI, however, concluded after investigation that it was a case of suicide, not murder. Initially, the CBI had filed a case of murder against Ashok Todi and others at Bankshall court. “Now we are working out our legal strategies. The charge will be modified to abetment to suicide and others,” the source added.

According to CBI sources, the agency has gathered sufficient evidence to nail the seven accused, including the cops.

Ashok Todi, father-in-law of Rizwanur, his brother Pradip Todi and family friend Anil Saraogi are among the people who will be chargesheeted. Among the cops, the then deputy commissioner of police (detective department) Ajay Kumar, AC anti-rowdy squad of the same department Sukanti Chakraborty and Sub-Inspector Krishnendu Das, are to be chargesheeted. Moiuddin alias Pappu, a family friend of the Rehman’s, is also to be chargesheeted.

The sleuths are bringing in charges of criminal conspiracy, abetment to suicide and criminal intimidation against the seven accused. The CBI sleuths said that since substantial evidence against former police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee and deputy commissioner (headquarters) Gyanwant Singh was not available they were not included in the list.

“Finding substantial evidence against them in the court is a different thing,” the source added. CBI sources also said that Priyanka Todi, Rizwanur’s wife, will be produced as a witness in the court. “Priyanka is important for the case. How can one undermine that,” added a CBI source.
