Kolkata, February 3 Five months after the official announcement that investigation into the Tagore Nobel medallion theft from Visva-Bharati has been closed, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to reopen the case soon.

Recently rumour was rife that the stolen medallion was in Bangladesh and could be with the Kamtapur Liberation Front chief Jiban Singh. Reportedly, Bangladesh CID was investigating the matter and was conducting a combing operation in Dhaka to nab Singh.

CBI Special Director M L Sharma on Sunday said: “We are yet to officially receive any such information. If we receive any such information we will reopen the case.”

He added, “Announcement of the investigation being closed was just a formality, as during that time, we did not have any clue on which we could have based our probe. Now if we get some clues, we will reopen the investigation.”

Sharma further said that on Monday, he will contact his counterpart in Bangladesh for any information regarding the case. “If we get some official information about the possibility of the medallion being in Bangladesh, we will soon send a team there,” said a senior CBI officer.

On September 1 last year, the CBI office in Kolkata had issued a notice saying that the case was being closed. PS Ghosh, the CBI deputy superintendent, had undersigned the notice, which was submitted to the court.

The Nobel medallion, along with 47 memorabilia of Rabindranath Tagore, were stolen from Visva-Bharati museum on March 25, 2004.
