Chandigarh To reduce the hazards that occur in science laboratories, the Central Board of Secondary Education has instructed schools to follow the prescribed guidelines.

From easily accessible exits to an adequate number of fire extinguishers, the Board is leaving no stones unturned to ensure the safety of students.

In a circular issued to the heads of institutions, the Board has observed that in many schools, the essential safety measures are either not given much attention or are ignored altogether.

“Gas fittings in the chemistry laboratory often do not fulfill the mandatory standards. In many cases, chemicals are not stored in a safe manner. It is also observed that there is no provision of exhaust fans in chemistry laboratories,” the notification reads. The Board has also taken a note of the lack of medical facilities in the laboratories.

Keeping in view all the anomalies, the Board has set some mandatory provisions, according to which laboratories need to have two wide doors for an unobstructed exit, an adequate number of fire extinguishers and periodical checking of electrical fittings.

Since chemistry laboratories are most susceptible to mishaps, schools have been told to secure storage of chemicals apart from proper labeling and upkeep.

The circular further states a team of experts will be sent to schools to ensure that they are implementing the guidelines.
