CBSE’s Class X exams optional only on paper?

Kolkata Even as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has declared its Class X examinations as optional, the Board has reportedly advised city schools not to encourage students to take the exams for the 2010-11 session.

“The examination, which was said to be optional, is not optional at all. In case of schools that run till Class XII, there are guidelines suggesting that students should not be encouraged to take the boards,” said Sharmila Bose, principal, Birla High School for Girls.

The advisory gains significance considering most CBSE schools in the city run till Class X.

Even the Kendriya Vidyalayas have been asked to conduct Class X assessments at the school level. “For schools that run till Class XII, the examination process for Class X will be totally internal in 2011,” said an official with the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.

School principals now are making all attempts to dissuade students from appearing in the board exams.

“None of the students in my school will appear in the board examination. For those willing to take the exams, I will try and convince them to go in for school-based assessments,” said Rita Chaterjee, principal, Apeejay School.

Mukta Nain, principal, Birla High School for Boys added: “In my school, we have so far received only one letter from a child wishing to take the boards. The other 200-odd students will not take the examinations.”
