The university today installed CCTV cameras at its Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library as part of its endeavour to modernise the university infrastructure. Besides, it also plans to install 32 such cameras at the Ganda Singh Punjabi Reference Library by March next year.
The installation of cameras would cost the university about Rs 3.75 lakh that would come from the University Grants Commission. The commission has extended the proposal of another Rs 3.2 lakh to install 32 more CCTV cameras in the university.
Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh said the entire record of the library such as catalogues; old newspapers, journals and periodicals would also be digitised latest by June next.
“This will not only help in increasing the shelf-life of these valuable documents, but also facilitate their better upkeep and maintenance, “ He said. He also directed the librarian to make every information available on-line to the users of library resources. “The library staff will also be trained to ensure that students and faculty do not face any difficulty in using the library,” he said.
