Celebrating womanhood: Ludhiana salutes 12 women achievers

Ludhiana International Women’s Day was celebrated by the Vocational Rehabilitation Training Centre (VRTC) for the Blind and Disabled, situated on Habowal Road opposite Kitchlu Nagar, in collaboration with the Punjab State Social Welfare Board (PSSWB), Chandigarh, on Sunday at Guru Nanak Bhawan. Chairperson of PSSWB, Vijaya Laxmi Bhadoo, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Twelve women achievers from Ludhiana district who have rendered their valuable services in the field of social work were honoured during the function. The awardees include: Rajni Bector, Chairperson, Cremica, Nirmal Rishi, Director, Alive Artist Group, social worker Vijay Rai Dhanda, Rachna Sharma, State Secretary, All India Human Rights Association, Punjab, Suversha Kalra, General Secretary, School for Deaf Children, Dr Madanjit Kaur Sahota, Director, Environment and Women Empowerment, SGPC, Neelam Gupta, Convener, Viklan Punarvase Kendra, Dr Neelam Sodhi, Director, Ashirwad, Meena Sharma, Managing Director, Harsh Vidya Mandir, Professor Nimita Sharma, Government College for Women, Sandeepika Malhotra, music lecturer, Government Girls Senior Secondary School and social worker Rajni Chawla. VRTC Executive director Sara Johnson and chairman Dr Arin Chatterjee also spoke on the occasion.

Another function to mark Women’s Day was organised at IMA House in BRS Nagar. Ludhiana SSP Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill was the chief guest while Dr S S Dhir, District Health Officer was the guest of honor. The programme included lectures on various social issues, contribution of doctors in the uplift of women in society, awareness about immunisation, cervical cancer awareness and screening programme. It was followed by a free check-up camp for women which included a medical check up including gynae, antenatal and blood sugar check up, PAP smear and colposcopy. Over 300 women were checked during the camp. About 150 PAP smears, 45 colposcopies, 50 ultrasounds and 15 mammographies were conducted. Free ultrasound scanning for needy patients was done at Delta Heart Centre while free mammography examination was done at Magnus Scan Centre. The aim of the celebration was ‘A healthy woman will lead to a healthy family and healthy families will lead to a healthy nation’. Dr Manoj Sobti, Dr Arun Mitra and other senior members of IMA Ludhiana were present on the occasion.
