Lucknow After New Delhi, it's now time for the mobile companies operating in the state to act against consumers using mobile handsets without an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI).

The state police has warned the companies to freeze such handsets, especially the Chinese-made handsets, which do not have an IMEI number.

“Such mobile handsets without IMEI numbers pose a threat to security as they cannot be traced during surveillance. Strict action will be taken against the companies flouting the orders,” said Vikram Singh, Director General of Police (DGP) in a circular sent to all the district police chiefs.

The DGP also directed the officers to shortlist companies, which were not following the guidelines set up by the Telecom Regulatory Authority India, so that action can be taken such errant companies.
