“Last week, Commissioner of Railway Safety(C circle), Sudhir Kumar, got the point machine from the spot of the accident to find out the cause of the derailment,” said a Central Railway source. Divisional Railway Manager, JN Lal, admitted that the point machine has been brought from Kurla to check for any defect.
“The setting of the point machine was changed when the Titwala-bound local crossed Kurla station on December 23, resulting in the derailment of 5 coaches,” added the source.
Chief Public Relations Officer of the Central Railway, S Mudgerikar, admitted that the inspection is on. “All the point machines and crossovers from CST to Karjat-Kasara and on the Harbour Line are being checked for any lapses.”
But Divisional Railway Manager JN Lal called it a routine practice and said, “Every three months, Civil Engineering Department and Signal and Telecom record the lapses and check the point machines and other things simultaneously. But after the accident, efforts are on to know the cause of the derailment.” Refusing to comment on this, Mudgerikar said, “As the Central Railway is conducting an inquiry into the incident, I don’t want to comment. After a month, they will send the report to the Railway Board, Delhi. Only then we will have a clear picture of what caused the accident.”
