Kolkata A Central team on Saturday reached West Midnapore to look into the developmental work in the tribal-dominated areas and is also expected to visit Lalgarh on Sunday, where three tribals recently died after a clash with the CPM cadres.

The team, which will also visit Bankura and Purulia, is being sent following unrest in Lalgarh and other tribal-dominated areas of the three districts. The Central team includes Planning Commission adviser Harish Chandra, National Rural Health Mission joint secretary Shalini Prasad and Jaya Laksmi, adviser to the ministry for women and child development, besides some senior Union government officials.

After reaching Midnapore town on Saturday evening, the team held a meeting with West Midnapore district magistrate N S Nigam. “We held a meeting regarding the development programmes in the district. We also discussed the work done and the work in progress in the various projects initiated by the Centre. They are scheduled to visit some areas here,” said Nigam.

Meanwhile, in the Lalgarh-Jhargram area, the blockade continued on Saturday in protest against the death of three tribals in clashes with CPM cadres.

Though tension between the CPM cadres and the local tribals has been mounting for some time now, the matters came to a head when a local CPM leader was shot dead allegedly by tribals a few days ago. The following day, three tribals lost their lives in clashes with the CPM cadres while they were taking out the funeral procession of their slain leader.
