Ahmedabad, March 5 Taking a serious note on the killing of two tribals in a police firing in Antarsuba village of Sabarkantha district on February 13, a team of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribe (NCST) will visit the village on March 7 and 8 to take stock of the situation.

The team will include NCST director G S Somawat and member, Tsering Samphal. Besides meeting the members of the families affected in the incident, the team will meet the chief secretary, Gujarat, as also secretaries from the Social Welfare and Tribal Welfare Departments. They will collect information about how the firing took place and what has the government done so far in this connection.

The visit comes in the wake of a report sent to the Commission by Madhusudan Mistry, Lok Sabha member from Sabarkantha. Antarsuba village falls in his Parliamentary constituency.

Meanwhile, Mistry and other Congress leaders, including Lok Sabha MP Tushar Chaudhary and legislators Ashwin Kotwal, Anil Joshiara and Kishan Patel, submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday. They demanded an immediate suspension of the police and forest officials involved in the firing. They also sought a fair compensation to the families of the deceased and to those injured in the incident.

The memorandum further demanded that the Central government should issue a direction to the state government to initiate the process of implementation of the Schedule Tribes and Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Rights) Act, 2006 in Gujarat to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

Giving details as to how the incident took place, the memorandum said the tribals had gone to the Antarsuba Range Forest Office to demand the release of five from their community arrested by the police and forest officials in the early hours of February 13 on charges of encroachment of forestland and cutting of trees.

But the police resorted to firing -- which resulted in the death of two on the spot -- while three others received bullet injuries. According to the memorandum, the shots were fired from a very close range and all of them sustained injuries above the waist.

The public representatives pointed out in the memorandum that the killing of Sangaji Bodat was a suspected case of custodial death, as he was arrested by the police from his house along with his son.

“While the son was released after a severe beating, it was surprising to see Sangaji dead in police custody,” the memorandum said.
