“We have already started joint operations with Orissa against the Naxals. Though the operation was supposed to be a three-state coordinated effort but after the new government was formed in Jharkhand, the state did not take part in it,” said Bengal DGP Bhupinder Singh after attending the meeting in New Delhi.
“The issue has been discussed in the meeting and we have been assured that Jharkhand will soon join us in the operation,” he added.
The meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary G K Pillai was attended by chief secretaries and DGPs of the states hit by the Naxal menace — Orissa, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. The Centre has also given positive response to Bengal’s demand of 10 more companies of Central Police Force, which will be deployed in the affected districts.
The meeting also discussed the developmental activities required to be undertaken in the affected districts. “We submitted reports on how the Maoists have obstructed developmental activities in the districts,” said Singh. Representatives from Union Ministries, including Environment and Forest, Power, Rural Development, Tribal Affairs and Telecom, as well as officials of the Planning Commission and Intelligence Bureau were present at the meeting.
