Ludhiana Of the total accidents taking place on roads, in 77 per cent of the cases truck drivers are at fault, so training them is a must. This was revealed by Union Transport Minister T R Baluat in a meeting held at New Delhi yesterday. In order to tackle the rising menace, the Centre has decided to open driving schools for truckers across the country for which land will be provided by the state government.

Charan Singh Lohara, President, All-India Motor Transport Congress, said, “Most of the drivers are untrained and in a majority of cases they are at fault.”

In the past too, private companies had also announced the setting up of driving schools but nothing materialised. “It seems that the Centre is serious about the issue as truck drivers are often blamed for rash driving. It would be better if they come on roads with proper training and a number of them can also go abroad with proper training.”
