Pune The Central Government on Friday approved a total amount of Rs 547 crore to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to implement various schemes, a major share — Rs 399 crore — will go for storm water drain, drainage and flood control and Rs 148 crore was sanctioned for constructing 4,000 tenements under the basic services for urban poor (BSUP) scheme of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi told The Indian Express.

Pardeshi held two separate meeting with the office bearers of the Union Urban Development Ministry and Housing Department in Delhi.

The first meeting was held with union secretary for housing Kiran Dhingra and JNNURM Mission director P K Mohanty. “The BSUP project is aimed at providing houses to those who do not have access to sanitation and drainage facilities. Earlier, in order to provide houses to the urban poor, ‘Valmiki Ambedkar Housing Scheme’ had been implemented. However, under this new scheme, rehabilitation of kachha houses, which do not have independent toilets, will be done. Those urban poor, who did not benefit from the earlier scheme, will now be covered,” Pardeshi said.

Tenements will be constructed on the government lands. It will take into account slum pockets all over the city, including Gandhinagar, Subhashnagar, Yashwantnagar, Laxminagar, Rasta Peth, Marketyard, Bhimnagar, Bharatnagar and Shastrinagar.

The second meeting was held with the urban development secretary Dr Ramchandran and P K Srivastava.

Civic officials V R Patil, Pravin Ashtikar and others were also present in Delhi for the meeting.
