Gandhinagar The Centre is expected to allot at least two speedboats to Gujarat by February end for effective maritime patrolling off the Saurashtra/Kutch coast. The Centre has sanctioned 10 speedboats for Gujarat under the Coastal Security Plan, which will be given to the state in a phased manner.

Secretary (Home) T S Bist said on Tuesday that the two speedboats – one weighing 12 tonnes and the other five tonnes – will be placed with the marine police stations set up by the government in Saurashtra and Kutch.

At present, there are 10 operational marine police stations in the coastal districts of Gujarat. They hire speedboats for Rs 1.25 lakh per month per boat.

The government has already launched a drive to recruit retired Navy and Indian Coast Guard personnel to man these stations and operate speedboats for deep-sea patrolling. As many as 115 retired personnel have been recruited till now, Bist added.
