Centre to help KMC set up new abattoir at Tangra

Kolkata The Union Ministry of Food Processing has agreed to partly fund the new abattoir project of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The Centre will give Rs 13 crore to the KMC for this project while the total cost for setting up the abattoir at Tangra will be Rs 29 crore.

The abattoir will comprise of fully automated equipments with adequate facilities for slaughtering large animals like buffaloes. In addition to this, the new slaughter house will comply with all the environment norms. It will be located at the stock yard of the existing slaughter house on D C Dey Road. According to a senior civic official, the union ministry asked the civic body to complete the project within 12 months, while the civic body has asked for an addition of six months and has cited several reasons in this regard.

The official said that the civic body is yet to start the tendering process for the project requirement. “We will initially appoint a project management consultant and later a project implementation agency for executing the project. But as of now, no tender has been floated for any of the agencies,” added the official.
