Kolkata An alert has been sounded in the city by the Union Home Ministry, who is said to have informed the Kolkata police today that a “Pashtoon-looking” and Taliban-trained “fidayeen” (suicide squad) has sneaked into the country to carry out attacks at “specific” installations in Kolkata, Mumbai and the national capital.

The city has been put on terror alert for the 17th time in the year, said a senior police officer.

The city police have stepped up vigilance.

“We have received some specific inputs from the Union Home ministry and other intelligence agencies,” said city Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty.

State Home Secretary Ardhendhu Sen said the information from the Centre has been sent to the DGP and Kolkata police chief and they have been asked to step up security.

A senior official said the state government had also received intelligence reports from the Border Security Force that a group of Taliban-trained terrorists has sneaked into the state and was planning to attack railway stations, bus terminals and Howrah, Malda, Siliguri and Jalpaiguri towns.
