Ahmedabad The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) standing committee has decided to slap a notice on a faculty member of the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) for causing a loss of Rs 2.74 crore to it.

The loss was incurred after the CEPT staffer gave wrong technical data for the construction project of a sports complex at Memco Naroda.

“There were some typing mistakes in the data because of which the tender had to be reworked, escalating the cost from Rs 14.12 crore to Rs 16.86 crore. The tender work deadline also had to be extended because of the mistake in calculation of the plinth height and estimation about the soil quality,” said Standing Committee Chairman Asit Vora, after a meeting on Thursday evening.

Municipal Commissioner I P Gautam said the project was started in 2006 and had to be put on hold for a long time leading to confusion.

“It was a calculation mistake that led to about 25 per cent difference in the material cost… we have decided not to give any further work to the faculty member concerned, but the development would not reflect adversely on other projects,” he said.

CEPT has been viewed as a favourite institution of the AMC in project assignments. However, there is a feeling that the centre was using AMC projects as experiments for its students.Vora refused to comment when asked if it was true that most projects assigned to the CEPT faculty were given to students instead of experts . This is first time that the civic body has empowered the municipal commissioner to issue a notice to the faculty of a reputed institution like CEPT.
