"We are the last to stop the facility. The same has been stopped elsewhere,'' said Joshi. In some parts of the state, some officers who did not issue the caste certificates for not getting adequate documents were attacked by people. Later, they were interrogated by the police officers for not issuing certificates. "Why should we be questioned when we are following the rules?'' said Joshi voicing the opinion of the officers operating the Citizens' Facilitation Centre at the district collectorate. The officers are doing their work and if they have to face life threats as well as being interrogated by the police, is unjustified, he added.
The argument of the officers here is that the caste verification committee had said that there should be a police officer, a social welfare department officer along with the officer while issuing the caste certificate. "We had never been given that facility,'' said Joshi.
District collector Prabhakar Deshmukh said it was a Statewide agitation and he would forward the letter to the State Government.
