Mumbai The Bombay University has set up a chair in Human Rights and Civil Liberties in the name of the first Indian Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, M C Chagla, one of India’s finest legal luminaries.

The University on Friday announced the creation of the Chair at a function where the former Chief Justice of India, M N Venkatachaliah, spoke about the great judge and his character, culture, intellect and generosity. Also present at the function were Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Swatanter Kumar, former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee and Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr Vijay Khole.

Venkatachaliah reflected upon the decline in values in the legal system today and how Chagla would have reacted to it. Chief Justice Kumar, who presided over the meeting, spoke at length about human rights issues and how he felt humbled to be sitting in the same chair where Chief Justice Chagla once presided over court proceedings.

Sorabjee too fondly recollected some delightful memories he shared with Chagla.Iqbal Chagla, the son of the late Chief Justice was also present at the function. The function concluded with the legendary judge’s grandson Riyaz Chagla recounting his last days as they heard the radio commentary of a test match together, eagerly anticipating a century by Sunil Gavaskar the following day. But that was not to be as he passed away that evening. The late Chief Justice had also served as India’s Ambassador to the USA and the High Commissioner to Britain in the late’50s and early’60s and was also India’s Education Minister in the cabinet of three PMs.
