They want the theatre to be restored to its previous owners. Sixty permanent and temporary Chanakya staff launched a signature campaign today, protesting against the New Delhi Municipal Corporation's (NDMC) plan to raze down the existing theatre and construct a multiplex cinema and mall.
Booking clerk Man Singh is one of the many employees who have been working at the theatre since its opening in 1970. Singh thinks he will not find another job because all his life he has only learnt how to run a cinema hall. Without any other qualification or experience, how can we get new jobs, he said.
According to staff, Chanakya was the only theatre in Chanakyapuri that offered affordable tickets to middle and lower middle class cinemagoers.
