Chandigarh blanks Himachal 4-0

Chandigarh, January 5 Hosts Chandigarh got the better of 4-0 Himachal Pardesh 4-0 in the boys’ under-17 hockey match on the opening day of the 53rd National School Games at the Sector 42 Sports Complex here on Saturday.

Chandigarh adopted a dominating game plan from the word go as it shot into the lead with a field goal scored by captian Gagandeep Singh in the 16 th minute. On crossing over Chandigarh defender Gurjinder Singh converted a penalty corner in 43rd minute to double the score. Diljot Singh completed (44th and 51 st minutes) to complete the tally.

Chandigarh boys played very well defeating visitors in every department. Himachal got one penalty corner which they wasted.

Punjab blanked Delhi 1-0. Ranwant Singh scored the match-winner in 56 th minute through penalty corner. In other matches Haryana beat Tamil Nadu by 5-0, UP beat Rajasthan by 14-0, Orissa beat Maharashtra by 11-0, Chhattisgarh beat MP by 2-1, Assam outplayed AP by 6-2. In the softball matches of boys, Chandigarh beat Goa by 16-0 in U-14, Maharashtra beat Delhi by 5-4, Vidya Bharti beat Gujarat by 8-7in U-19, and Chandigarh beat AP by 13-7 where as in the girls matches Chhattisgarh beat Goa by 11-0 U-17 and Chandigarh beat J & K by 11-1 in U-19. Earlier, Pradip Mehra, Adviser to the Chandigarh Administrator, inaugurated the School Games in which teams from 23 different states are taking in the Games.

National softball player Pranika from GMSSS-10, and National hockey player Damandeep Singh of GMSSS- 37/B took oath with other players. Orissa, Goa and Himachal Pardesh won first, second and third prizes in march-past, respectively. On this occasion S.K.Setia DPI (S) distributed skipping ropes and pullover jackets to all the participants.
