The alliance between the Trinamool and the Congress for the May 30 polls to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation collapsed on Saturday after the Congress announced its list of candidates for 88 of the 141 seats, ignoring Trinamool’s offer of 25 seats. Thereafter, Banerjee instructed her party leaders from Delhi to prepare for contesting in all the 141 seats.

A section within the state Congress, however, is still open about negotiations provided Banerjee concedes to some of their demands.

“Now we are concentrating on the Corporation polls and the victory of our candidates. It is essential that we do well in the elections after all that has happened,” said Pradip Bhattacharjee, working president of state Congress.

“We will go to the people and explain what has happened. We tried our best to save the alliance,” he said.

None of the senior leader’s wanted to comment on Banerjee’s recent remarks and announcement of the candidates for the 141 seats.

The state Congress, meanwhile, has asked all its candidates to campaign vigorously in the 88 wards of the Corporation and highlight the circumstances which led to the failure of the alliance.

“We will highlight civic issues, but people are asking us the reason behind the failure of the alliance. We are prepared to answer them and tell them how we have been humiliated,” said a senior state Congress leader.

In all likelihood the alliance break will benefit the ruling CPM as there might be a split in the anti-Left votebank. But the political observers think otherwise — keeping in mind the present political wave in Bengal, Banerjee may gain an absolute majority in the Corporation polls.
