“There has been a change in scenario with rapid growth of the city in the last 20 years. Thus, there is a need to study the cultural, educational, industrial, commercial, administrative, social and economic changes that have taken place in the city,” Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi has said in the proposal to carry out such a survey. The demographic composition has changed drastically with many people migrating into the city in the last few years. Similarly, the information technology (IT) growth has put the city on the national and even the global map, he said.
“The survey will include details of the entire changed scenario of the city and will be helpful in the planning of the new DP,” Pardeshi said.
A similar survey has been conducted in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, but for Pune it will be the first such effort. The civic administration has proposed that the Karve Institute of Social Science carry out the survey. The PMC while proposing the institute for the specialised job has demanded the completion of survey in six months and will pay Rs 16.46 lakh. No tender will be invited, he said.
The internationally recognised institute has got the relevant expertise and is involved in carrying out various research projects for the state and Union governments as also a number of multilateral agencies like the United Nation International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organisation (WHO).
The institute is basically into imparting postgraduate education and research, Pardeshi said adding that it will also rope in two experts from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences for helping in carrying out the socio-economic survey of the city.
