Life is all ha-ha

Goan cartoonist Mario Miranda has become a frequent flyer to Mumbai these says. The 80-year-old artist who captured popular culture with his murals and doodles at Café Mondegar of the Mumbai junta, is now showing at Pheroza Godrej’s Cymroza Gallery basking in the glory of his new book The World of Mario. Shaking hands with him were writer Anil Dharker, who picked up a copy of the book and got Miranda to sign it, while Dolly Thankore said the exhibit was “like Disneyland”. The show consists of limited edition portfolios that document his travels in and outside India.

Dharker commented that Miranda’s talent has not been taken as seriously as it should. “This is because he is a cartoonist, however, very few have the flair for detailing and humour that Miranda does.” Habiba Miranda, Mario’s elusive wife made a rare appearance. “For me, Mario is my husband. It is true he is a legend but we met as human beings with common interests. We have grown up together and this show is a documentation of all our travels—the book is our life in print.”

Also present were foodie Farzana Contractor, artists Jenny Bhatt and Brinda Chudasama Miller, photographer Vikram Bawa, and the consul general of Italy Giampaolo Cutilo.

Showstopper The air was rather lighthearted, people could not stop laughing at the cartoons.
