Created on September 21, 2005 on an online networking site, by software professional Aniruddha Patil, the community has only grown since. From reviewing eating-places to sharing culinary recipes, they exclusively write and talk food. Among the present 4275 members are connoisseurs of various cuisines, food lovers brimming with gourmandize and even owners and chefs of some of the restaurants of Pune who are able to get ready reviews and constructive criticism from potential customers.
'A Food & Drink Guide for Pune City' reads the vignette on the community page. The members comment on their experiences at the restaurants by starting a thread on that particular topic and the owners, if members, try to comply with their demands. To cite an example, a classy restaurant in Kalyaninagar started serving mineral water for free after the members of PEO complained about it in one of their discussion threads.
The community page also retains the Pune Eat Outs (PEO) directory that houses contact details of good restaurants at-hand on the networking site. The directory also has information on the delivery facilities and other comments about the restaurants.
"Initially there was general cynicism that the planned offline meets wouldn't succeed," recalls Aniruddha. "After the first few meetings though, the owners and moderators of the community stood vindicated." Four people attended the first meeting, which took place in a corner of the restaurant. They now need to book the place. Newly set-up restaurants now vie to have the PEO monthly meeting at their places. These meetings get the restaurant 50 customers at once and if the customers like the food, the meetings build the restaurant's customer chain.
Chaitra Patel, the owner of a restaurant in Aundh and a member of the community says, ``The community spreads love for food. It also helps me interface with my clients online."
The members of PEO also get discounts at certain restaurants. What generally attracts the people is the love for food that these people share. The active community has created a network of like-minded people and strangers have become friends. "It's more about the people than the food," says Aniruddha.
Aneesh Kamath, a member of the community reminisces about the meeting they had two years back in a restaurant near Wagholi. "We had asked the restaurant owners to organize a live-band playing for us. They complied and we ate while Strange Brew, the band, played their music."
"We are also kept updated about the new places that are coming up in Pune by fellow members," Aniruddha says, "One gets nostalgic when discussing some places that closed down like Deccan Gymkhana's Lucky Restaurant.
The money, which the members saved due to discounts last year in one of their meets, was used to supply food to 'Ishwarpuram', a home for under-privileged and financially backward children at Fulgaon.
The members of the community are discussing about making the food directory available outside the networking site on a blog or perhaps a website. The idea seems scrumptious.
