Kolkata Sunil Chhetri has set his sights firmly on England. The East Bengal striker has got an offer for trail at Coventry City and has sought a leave from his club to go there. And it has put the club in a serious dilemma.

As per Chhetri’s contract with East Bengal, he is allowed to take leave whenever there’s an offer for trail from the overseas. The club has requested him to play the match against Chirag United on Saturday. Chhetri was reluctant initially but has agreed. He is expected to leave for England on Saturday night and will return on January 31.

“Nothing has been finalised yet. I have got a call-up for trial at Coventry City. Every player aspires to play in the English League and I am going to appear for the trial,” Chhetri said.

Coventry City play in the Coco Cola Championship in the English League — just a rung below the Premier Division. They have reached the fourth round of the ongoing FA Cup and will play against Torquay United on Saturday.

Apart from the English club, Chhetri also has an offer from American Major League Soccer team (MLS) DC United. This club reportedly had talks with East Bengal goalie Subrata Paul, Mahindra United midfielder Steven Dias and Mohun Bagan midfielder Lalkamal Bhowmick as well. All are willing to go. “I will go abroad next season. Even if I get less money initially, I am game,” Paul said the other day.

Meanwhile, East Bengal’s Nigerian striker Yusif Yakubu is likely to skip the match on Saturday. Yakubu went home after his father’s death and has returned yesterday. East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmick has his task cut out.
