Kolkata The body of a five-year-old girl was found in a pond in Dakshindari near Lake Town.

The locals noticed the sack, its mouth tied, in the pond — adjacent to a slum area — around 8 am on Thursday. On opening it, they found the body. The child has been identified as Ankita, daughter of Tapas Manna.

The body bore no marks of injury, but the locals suspect she had been raped.

Ankita, along with parents Tapas and Ratna, had been staying with her maternal uncle Uttam Mondol for a month. Mondol is a resident of the labourers' quarters, near a closed factory of Bird company.

On the night of December 31, the locals had arranged a feast to celebrate the New Year's Eve. The feast had begun around 7 pm and went on well past midnight. “It was a pool-in fest, accompanied by a show of fireworks. Some youths had come to the feast in an inebriated state,” said one of the residents.

Around 9 pm, the child had stepped out of her home after dinner to see the fireworks. She never returned. A case has been lodged by the Lake Town police.

“The body has been sent for medical examination,” said Additional SP North 24-Parganas, Sujoy Chanda. No one has been arrested. The family has not been able to provide any leads.

Punishment for rapist by Ishraque Khan on 02 Jan 2009

This is really a very sad. Persons involving this should think that if the same tragedy happens with their mother, sister, wife, or daughter, will they welcome it. If not they should not involve in this kind of crime. And to stop the criminals govt. should make the tough laws as for terrorism because this is also a kind of terrorism. Stoning to death the criminal at public place can only be punishment so that whenever anyone thinks about this crime he should also think about the consequences if caught guilty.
