Pune Four Nepali child labourers were rescued by the officials of labour department from an eatery Andhra Mess in Viman Nagar after a surprise raid at 6.30 am on Friday. The police have arrested owner Raman Reddy for employing children in the eatery.

Of the four rescued, two were below fourteen. The children have been taken to the Boys Observation home at Yerwada. “They will be kept at the home till the parents take custody of the children,’’said assistant labour commissioner Sambhaji More.

It all started with an anonymous call made to the Collectorate which was followed up by the labour department with the help of police and non-governmental organisation ‘Action for Child Rights’. According to More, the department acted quickly. “Manish Shroff from ARC, two officers from the labour department, two police officials from Airport police station conducted the raid and rescued the children,’’ he said.

The labour department has listed 8,500 outlets in the city as hazardous establishments for child labourers and have also seeked declaration from the owners that they would not take children to work in these units. “Around 1,500 have given the declaration,’’ he said.
