Pune, February 22 For a month now, 20-year-old Kausar Khan has been running from one hospital to another, seeking treatment for her seven-month-old child, Owais Khan. A resident of Kondhwa, Kausar Khan's husband is an autorickshaw driver, who she says, has refused to help out.

Owais suffered a head injury in December when he slipped from the hands of a relative of the Khans. "A young relative of ours was tossing Owais in the air in a playful way. After a couple of repetitions, Owais slipped from her hand and landed straight on the head," says Kausar Khan. Owais suffered a skull fracture. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital. After three days, he was then shifted to the general ward before being brought home.

But the swelling on the right side of Owais head has slowly become worse. Repeated visits to hospitals have not helped. A latest CT scan report says Owais needed urgent surgery. Kausar says a private hospital in Pimpri has told her that she will have to pay Rs 25,000 for Owais surgery.

"My father left us when I was a child. My mother who works as a maid has brought me up. Whatever she earns is not even enough to get two square meal a day. My husband refuses to help. From where do I get the Rs 25,000?" asks Kausar with tears in her eyes.

Doctors at Yeshwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pimpri who examined Owais on Thursday, said Owais' skull has suffered a skull fracture and the fracture has grown. "He needs to undergo cranioplasty, the cost of which varies at different hospitals. Some hospitals charge Rs 40,000 while others will charge up to Rs 35,000. If the surgery is not done immediately, his brain might come out," said YCMH medical superintendent Dr Anand Jagdale.
