Chandigarh, January 31 The intense cold wave showed little signs of abating in Punjab and Haryana, with the minimum temperature hovering close to freezing point today.

Adampur and Amritsar in Punjab were bitterly cold, recording respective minimums of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius and minus 0.5 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological Department said here.

While the minimum at Amritsar was six degrees below normal, the low at Patiala settled at a bone-chilling 1.3, down seven degrees. Ludhiana was also extremely cold at 1.5 degrees Celsius, six degrees below normal.

However, the department has forecast that temperature will rise from Saturday.

Narnaul in Haryana reeled under intense cold, with the low dropping to 0.5 degrees Celsius, down five, while piercing cold swept Ambala at 1.7 degrees Celsius, down six degrees. The minimum at Karnal was six degrees below normal at 1.8 degrees Celsius, while Hisar registered a low of 5 degrees Celsius, two below normal.
