China, the focus country of the fair this year, is represented through a contingent of 13 stalls. The items range from fashion accessories to clothes, electronic gadgets, furniture, and engineering goods.
Chinese companies, participating for the first time, are looking forward to a good feedback in the Indian market for their goods. There is also hope for some good tie-ups with Indian companies for exports and imports.
“This is our first time in India and we expect good business,” said Avie Lavigne, an executive from a Chinese trade company
Chinese PDA phones, laptops, iPod-like music players, and handycams were the most sought-after, available at throwaway prices.
Another pavilion that received tremendous footfall was Yishion, a Chinese company that deals in clothes and fashion accessories. It has more than 3,000 retail stores across China. The retail house is planning to open a store in Park Street in Kolkata.
“The goods were really impressive and competitively priced. But one would have to be cautious about the longevity and quality of the products,” said Utpal Sarkar, a visitor at the fair.
The eleven-day fair, which kicked off on January 17, has been jointly organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BNCCI) and the state government in collaboration with the India Trade Promotion Organisation.
