Kolkata The Hills erupted again on Monday as the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha resumed its agitation after a brief Christmas break, enforcing an indefinite strike in government offices in Darjeeling.

Its student wing — Vidyarthi Morcha — blocked national highways 55 and 31A connecting Darjeeling, Siliguri and Sikkim for over four hours.

Alipurduar Additional SP Anup Jaiswal said over 250 GJM supporters were arrested for blocking roads at Dalsinghpara in north Bengal’s Dooars, but were released on personal recognisance bond. Those arrested included Wilson Champamarey, the MLA from Kalchini.

In the Dooars, GJM supporters held a demonstration outside the local police station at the district headquarters in Alipurduar in protest against the arrests.

On Tuesday, the blockade will be held for five hours and thereafter, the duration will increase everyday, the GJM has announced.

“These agitation programmes will go on. We are waiting for the Centre’s response on the next round of tripartite talks, which is to be held on political level,” said GJM spokesman Roshan Giri.
