“The CAS award means more to me than the Oscar award,” Pookutty had said earlier. The sound designer accepted the award along with re-recording mixers Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke. Visibly moved by the honour, Pookutty said, “This is the biggest honour I can ever get.”
He went on to dedicate the award to ‘the sound gods of India.’ Slumdog Millionaire faced competition from The Dark Knight ,Iron Man, Quantum of Solace and WALL-E.. The Mumbai-based sound designer is now looking forward to February 22, when the Oscars will be announced. He bagged the BAFTA award a few days back.
Pookutty, who grew up in a remote village in Kerala, came to Mumbai after graduating from FTII, Pune. He made his film debut in 1997 with Rajat Kapoor’s Private Detective. After Sanjay Leela Bansali’s Black the industry took notice of him. Pookutty produced exceptional work in Gandhi My Father and Ghajini.
