CISH plans to release a new hybrid mango variety — Hybrid-39 — and three new varieties of guava — CISH-G-1, CISH-G-5 and CISH-G-6 — within a few months. “We are in the process of propagating the plant material for the fields. Once the varieties are released, agriculture institutions and others will rush to us seeking the new varieties of the fruits,” said CISH Director B M C Reddy.
Highlighting the importance of Hybrid-39, Principal Scientist Shailendra Rajan said: “Unlike other mango varieties, Hybrid-39 will have a high caroteinoid content. This means the fruit will be rich in Vitamin A. Besides this, the hybrid will be sweeter than other mango varieties as it high on Total Soluble Solid (TSS) content.”
He added, “The new variety has a regular fruit bearing feature. Normally, mango trees give fruits every alternate year.”
The other unique feature is its high firmness that extends its shelf life.
“As mangoes are transported extensively from one state to another, it is important that the fruit not get pulpy and soft in the process,” said a CISH scientist.
About the new guava varieties, CISH scientists said the antioxidant content make them different from the ordinary varieties.
“Besides, the varieties will also have a good yield and a long shelf life,” said a scientist.
