Chandigarh, February 4 The city consumes around 20,000 birds, slaughtered under unhygienic conditions, daily. But the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, which boasts of providing best services to its residents, has so far failed to even construct a decent bird slaughterhouse despite making provisions of funds in the budgetary estimates.

In the budget proposal, the Municipal Corporation has clearly pointed out that the city residents consume around 20,000 birds in a day, which are slaughtered under unhygienic conditions by the meat shop owners, resulting in insanitation.

Despite mentioning in the budget proposal that there was no check on the quality of chicken being slaughtered by the meat sellers, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has failed to come up with a bird slaughterhouse. The site selected near the existing slaughterhouse in Industrial Area, MC has failed to get the required land allocated from the administration.

“Chandigarh, being a planned city, needs to have a centralised bird slaughter house where quality check arrangements can be made. It will also lead to improvement of sanitary conditions around shops slaughtering birds,” said the proposal included in the budgetary estimates for the year 2007-08.

As per the estimate, a sum of Rs 3.5 crore has been proposed to set up the slaughterhouse. The office of Medical Officer Health of Municipal Corporation already has Rs 175.65 lakh as unspent amount since April 1, 2006, while Rs 175 was proposed in the annual plan. Despite all these provisions, the MC failed to start the project, as it could not manage to get the required land sanctioned from administration.

The issue after being discussed at various levels, will come up once again during the coordination committee meeting comprising officials from administration and MC. Mayor Pardeep Chhabra recently said the UT Chief Architect has approved the site and that he would take up the issue with the UT Advisor on Tuesday.
